A cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Noir, Marselan was first bred in 1961 at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. But despite the outsized reputations of its parent grapes, Marselan's small size, (meaning it produces less wine per grape than other, larger varietals) tempered its popularity among winemakers until its quality-over-quantity was recognized among winemakers in France's southern Rhone Valley in the early '90s. Garzón's version--soft, mineral, blackfruit-laden, and complex--is one of our favorites. Drink it with feijoada on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
