MASSERIA LI VELI 2023 Susumaniello 'Askos' (Puglia, Italy)

Susumaniello is an ancient red wine varietal from Puglia. Deep ruby red. It is a wine with great character on the nose: sensations of black and red berries are backed by spicy notes, hints of licorice and cocoa and notes of eucalyptus. It is a full-bodied but not heavy wine, extremely satisfying and easy to drink. 
From what we understand, MASERIA LI VELI is one of the few that brought this rare varietal back to international recognition in a big way. They are another brand that is committed to showcasing the region’s native grapes. After industrial boom, many vine growers turned to more profitable international grape varietals and stopped planting more obscure local vareitals. It is great to see a return to these interesting, local grapes.
