ZIDARICH 2021 Vitovska (Carso, Friuli, IT)

Following his father, Benjamin Zidarich began in 1988 with just 1 hectare (1.2 acres) and has since grown his holdings to 8, all of which he farms biodynamically. His focus is Vitovska - a white wine varietal native to the calcium rich red-soils of Carso. Beneath this red soil lies a bed of limestone. The wines produced here are unique and mineral driven, influenced by the Adriatic breezes as well as the soils. 

The 2020 vintage sees extended skin contact and aging in large Slavonian oak (2 years), capturing the grape’s delicate aromatics with a firm, textural core.

This wine is considered a benchmark expression of Vitovska — savory, stony, and deeply rooted in Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s rugged Karst (area) landscape. Subtle apricot and stone-fruit give way to a mineral backbone, with very, very light tannins and a clean finish. This is a unique, singular wine.
